What can you do with a major in sociology or anthropology? Come hear from alumni about how they used their skills throughout their career, in fields as diverse as teaching, consulting, non-profits, genetic counseling, and business. Also hear from a student who has charted her own path through courses and internships to several job offers. With an introduction by the Career Center. All are welcome, registration encouraged. Dinner preceded the presentation.

HMS Public Health Week: History of Public Health and Epidemiology Talk

Jim Downs, PhD presents "Before John Snow: How Slavery and Colonialism Led to the Development of Public Health" - a public talk about the history of public health and epidemiology. We often hear and read that public health and epidemiology was due to John Snow, cholera, and that infamous Broadstreet Pump Handle. Historian of Medicine Jim Downs uncovers longer, and geographically wider history: the untold ways that slavery, imperialism, and war created built environments—ships, plantations, and battlefields—that enabled physicians to study the spread of infectious disease.

James Shrader: No Way Out? The Crisis of the Cuban Revolution

Cuba is facing one of the worst crises in its history, with regional implications for the United States and beyond. In the last two years alone, 425,000 citizens have abandoned their homeland for opportunities elsewhere, a staggering 4% of the population. The reasons for this mass exodus are many: hyperinflation, food insecurity, fuel shortages, growing inequality, the six-decades-old US embargo, trade government repression, and, for many young people, the lack of a promising future.
