M.A. & Ph.D. in History Programs
The graduate program in the Department of History trains students for careers in research and teaching as well as non-academic pursuits, offering both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The program offers students a small, intimate experience of close collaboration with world-class faculty who work in diverse research fields all connected to the broader theme of Transnational History. Our scholarly research is at the forefront of new historiographic developments that use transnational perspectives to rethink major historical issues, providing students with a strong foundation in historical knowledge and practical skills that are essential in the globalized world.
We train students for careers in academic research and teaching, or in library, business and government positions dedicated not just to understanding the past, but to shaping the present.
Lehigh history offers:

The M.A. program typically requires 30 credit hours (10 courses) and is generally completed in 3-4 semesters. It includes a capstone requirement for which students choose among various options (primary source thesis, review essay, comprehensive exam, or composite portfolio), depending on their professional goals.
In recent years, Ph.D. candidates have published in top academic journals and published book versions of their dissertations. Some have gotten tenure track university positions, while others work in community colleges or independent high schools, and still others have taken public history-related positions in government or the private sector.

Non-Degree, History
- A bachelor’s degree from an approved institution with an overall grade point average of at least 3.2. Applicants with undergraduate GPAs below 3.2 may be admitted with the approval of the department in which they wish to take courses. A personal statement and writing sample are both required.
